It’s the third week of January, which means we’re three weeks into 2016!! I really love to set goals and intentions for every month, but I especially love it at the beginning of the year. My big theme for this year is to elevate myself and others by bringing light and positivity into every aspect of my life and to help others do the same thing.
Are you a goal-setter or New Year’s resolutions person? Maybe you’ve made a resolution to start eating healthier. Or perhaps your goals are to become strong and fit by sticking to a new exercise routine. Or maybe you told yourself you would start doing yoga or meditations. Maybe you’ve decided that 2016 will finally be the year that you overcome that health issue you’ve been dealing with and reach a state of vibrant health.
Maybe your goals and resolutions aren’t even related to health and wellness, but whatever your intentions are for 2016, I am sure that you can relate to the whole process of setting resolutions and goals for the New Year.
Do you remember on December 31st, how excited you were for the New Year? And how on January 1st, you were READY to take on 2016 and accomplish those goals that you set for yourself? Do you still feel that same motivation, now that we’re three weeks into 2016?
If you answered no, don’t worry. I know from experience what it’s like to be super motivated at the beginning of the year and then have it fade away just a few short weeks later! But what is it that happens that we lose our motivation for these resolutions and goals that we were so excited about before?
Well here’s a huge one: our daily responsibilities and routines take up a lot of our time. We often get so distracted by the “busyness” of it all that we forget to stop for a moment and check in with ourselves. We push aside our goals because there just isn’t enough time to focus on them right now, and other things start to take priority.
Another obstacle that many people face is the lack of social support for their goals. You need to surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed and who are going to cheer you on every step of the way! It’s these people who are going to push you to keep going to achieve your goals even when you’re just about ready to give up.
So how do we overcome these blocks and find the motivation to keep working towards our goals and succeed?
You’ve got to want it!
The first step is to have the will and desire for change and growth. You must really want to achieve these goals in order for them to become a reality. Your motivation won’t last if you’re doing something because someone said you should do it, or because it’s something that you think you should do even though you’re not totally convinced of it. It’s that deep desire for something that will keep you excited to continue going after it and facilitate your success in achieving that goal.
Feel the emotions
In order to motivate yourself, and to stay motivated, about your New Year’s resolutions and goals, you need to feel the emotions associated with achieving them. How will you feel when you are successful and have attained what you’ve been working so hard for? Imagine the joy, pride and satisfaction that will come with your achievement! If you’re working towards anything health-related, imagine how good you’ll feel, both inside and out. To finally have energy, to finally stop feeling pain, to finally heal. Allow yourself to really feel the emotions associated with this success and allow it to propel you and keep motivating you to work towards those goals.
Everyone says to practice self-love, but what does that really mean? Self-love is the act of caring for oneself through actions that support our health and growth as a person. It’s about feeling appreciation and gratitude about who you are and everything that is a part of you. It’s about making choices on the basis of doing what is best for you and your body. Eating well, exercising, relieving stress, doing things that you enjoy, being creative… all these things support your well-being, and by doing them you are expressing self-love. You deserve vibrant health. You deserve to achieve your goals. If your goal is to eat healthier this year, then be loving towards yourself and give your body the nourishing foods that it needs to thrive and support you. Whatever your goals are, by practising self-love you are making the choice to work towards them no matter what, because you know that’s what’s best for you and your personal growth.
Celebrate the small wins
Sometimes we get too caught up in the big end-goal and forget to praise ourselves for accomplishing the smaller steps leading up to that larger goal. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. I’ll repeat that. It’s OK to make mistakes! Remember to always acknowledge the progress you make everyday! Let it motivate it you to continue down the path of progress (not perfection) in order to reach your goals. After all, enjoying the journey and learning along the way is just as important as reaching the goal itself.
Surround yourself with the right people
As I mentioned earlier, having social support is so important for reaching our goals! Not only does it hold us accountable for the goals we’ve set out to accomplish, but it also offers a network of encouragement for when we stumble. You can reach out to family and friends, as well as join local and online communities. You can also find a wealth of resources online, just by doing a simple Google search of what your goal is. You’ll likely find blogs and forums that offer support and encouragement from people who are currently working towards the same goal as you; or have already been through it, reached that goal, and are now sharing their experience.
So as a summary, the 5 things you should do to stay motivated to achieve your goals and resolutions are:
- You must truly feel the will and desire for change and growth to get to the end result
- Feel the emotions associated with achieving your goal: joy, pride, satisfaction, etc
- Practice self-love by making choices that support our health and growth as a person
- Praise yourself for accomplishing each small step that leads up to that larger goal
- Surround yourself with people that will support and encourage you to reach your goal
And on that note, let’s encourage each other to stay motivated and keep working on our 2016 resolutions and goals! I want to hear from you – what are you working towards this year?
